Shining a spotlight on the Killzone Vita game teased long before the system's release, Sony announced Killzone Mercenary at Gamescom last week.

A first person shooter exclusive to the PlayStation handheld, a live action trailer displayed an elite team who didn't appear to fight for either the iconic Helgasht or the opposing ISA forces (the two conflicting factions of the Killzone series), having tackled both groups throughout. Although little gameplay footage was shown, the trailer offered a glimpse of touch-based melee takedowns highly reminiscent of those seen in Killzone 3 and in-game currency awarded for kills, potentially hinting at purchasable equipment or leaderboards.

"As a mercenary, you're free to decide which tactics and loadouts you'll use to fulfill your contract," writes Hermen Hulst (Managing Director of Guerilla Games) on the PlayStation Blog. "Your employers will reward you with state-of-the-art weaponry and cold, hard cash as long as you get the job done"

With an advertised release window of 2013, we'll have more details when they arrive. In the meantime, head over to the PlayStation Blog for the full trailer.
