Harmonix today revealed their musically-driven first person shooter.

Called Chroma, the game will be a free-to-play PC shooter centering around music driving the action forward and that timing will be essential to gameplay. Harmonix is developing the title jointly with Hidden Path Entertainment.

"The key aspect of Chroma that separates it from everything else in its field is THE MUSIC." said Eric Pope, Community Manager at Harmonix on their website. "No longer is music incidental to your FPS experience, it is a core pillar of the entire game's design!"

Harmonix stated that Chroma will "reimagine the classic Arena FPS formula, infusing fast-paced shooter action with music-driven gameplay." The game's soundtrack will be tied directly to the first person shooting mechanics, combat and even level traversal. Instruments such as bass, electric guitars and drums will serve as weapons to utilize in the game.

Harmonix will support multiple classes of characters as well as multiplayer. Harmonix stated that each class will have their own unique gameplay mechanics, perks and will have a deep customization system tied to it.

“Chroma has been a dream project of mine for some time,” said Harmonix co-founder and CEO Alex Rigopulos. “Watching the teams at Harmonix and Hidden Path begin to bring this vision to life has been tremendously exciting."

Harmonix stated that players can sign up for a Closed Alpha of the game at PlayChroma.com
