I think if one were to look up “long awaited” in the dictionary, you might very well come across a reference to Operation Flashpoint for the Xbox. But now it’s not just near, it’s looming on the horizon like a mass of Russian T-80s in a bad mood - and it’s just over two months until you’ll see the game on the shelf.

Codemasters passed along word today of this release, and revealed a few details on the game itself. Below is an excerpt from their original text.

"The original PC version of Flashpoint is still considered to be the pinnacle of digital soldiering, and that acclaimed gameplay is fully-featured in this new version with no concessions to console-style arcade shooters. You’re going to have to keep your wits about you and fight with your head, not your trigger finger."

So what does Operation Flashpoint: Elite offer the seasoned Flashpoint veteran? Well people familiar with the PC version will feel right at home; the old neighbourhoods are all there, though the greenery is more lush and the grass thicker. But other than the chance to revisit old battlefields, you might think there’s not much for the gamer who knows Flashpoint like the back of his hand., but you’d be wrong.

Thanks to the wonders of Xbox Live and a ground-up rewrite of the network code, Operation Flashpoint: Elite is going to be the one of best online combat experiences on any platform. With voice communications and so much tactical freedom, matched with the unrivalled realism of the original operation flashpoint, it's going to be squad-based heaven for the serious virtual soldier.

So you know when, you know what, and you know why, and the final question is - how much? Operation Flashpoint: Elite will retail for £19.99, which is great value for what’s on offer - the most realistic all-round warfare experience you’re going to get without signing up for real."
