Midway Games announced Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe. When a cataclysmic force merges conquerors from two universes, conflict is inevitable. Kombat forces friends to fight, worlds to collide, and unlikely alliances to be forged. In order to save all they know, the heroes and villains of Mortal Kombat must wage war against the combined might of the DC Universe (DCU). How can either side prevail when rage blinds them to the dark threat poised to destroy them all?

For the first time ever Scorpion, Sub Zero and the warriors from Midway's fighting franchise face off against Batman, Superman and other iconic and powerful DC Super Heroes, featuring signature attacks for both sides and a unique and intertwining storyline, written as a collaboration between the Mortal Kombat creative team and top comic scribes Jimmy Palmiotti (Painkiller Jane, Marvel Nights, Jonah Hex, 21 Down) and Justin Gray (Batman: Legends of the Dark Knight, JLA Classified, Punisher Red X-Mas, The Resistance) MK vs. DCU is slated to ship for the PLAYSTATION 3 and Xbox 360 in Fall 2008.

If they would have announced this on April 1st, I would have called it a joke. In fact I still might call it a joke. Marvel vs Capcom turned out really good in the past, but I don't think MK VS DC will. Maybe I'm pessimistic, maybe I'm jaded. Probably a little of both.

Marvel vs. Capcom only worked out because of the high flying, over the top combat. SNK vs Capcom didn't do nearly as well. There has never been a good DC fighting game and the latest MK games are a bit stale. This is a cash in more than anything else and a laughable one.

Mmm Mortal Kombat WAS cool back in the day... and compared to Marvel, DC doesnt have the 'flare' that marvel has.... doesn't look promising to me neither!

I must agree, the cash cow of Mortal Kombat has been stale for a while. I was an avid fan of fighting games back in the day, but don't care much for any of them now.

Bah. You're missing the important point:

This has Batman, case closed.

I don't like MK or more generically, the fighting genre as a whole. But I will buy this game, just to kick everyone's butt as Batman.

(Can you tell I'm a batman fanboy?)

What kind of mashup is this?

MK has fatalities. Lets just hope that they DONT give fatalities to the superheroes. Who wants to see Batman and Superman performing fatalities? That's just ridiculous.

lol good point. didn't think about that. wonder how thats going to work since fatalities are what makes MK different from other fighters

Bah, poppycock and hornswoggle. The only good Batman game released in years was Assassins Creed. After this is released I'm sure the only good game featuring Batman to be released in years will still be Assassins Creed.

Seriously the only thing MK has is fatalities, other than that it has nothing you can't get better in other fighting games. As whitetiger said giving superheroes fatalities is just dumb, end of story. Sure you could give them finishers that don't kill opponents or do dubious things (like Superman flinging an enemy into space or something) but where's the Mortal Kombat in that? There's no way they can mesh these two without it being laughable.

Mind you, I was an MK fanboy. I loved the series up until Shaolin Monks which annoyed me for messing with the backstory of the games (the reason I liked MK in the first place). Then came along Armageddon which did nothing for the backstory and had bad gameplay and no real fatalities. This is not a good way to save the MK brand and it might do more harm than good in the end.

In the preview in the newest Official Xbox Magazine, it was implied that the superheroes would not have fatalities.

So... what are they gonna have friendships or something? Grah, this makes less sense as the days go by. Hulk smash silly Midway! Oops... I mean - Solmon Grundy smash silly Midway!

The way I read it, is that the fatalties and a good deal of the blood are being taken out of the game. Isn't that what Mortal Kombat was about?
