"We're looking forward to opening a whole new set of challenges for 'Tropico' players," said Phil Steinmeyer, president of PopTop Software. "On one hand, El Presidente has more tourist attractions - beach villas, tennis courts and nature preserves lure Yanqui tourists and their fat wallets to his tropical paradise. On the other hand, El Presidente can now use colonial forts, army bases, and dungeons to repress the small number of local malcontents who fail to see the glory of the player's leadership."
"In 'Tropico,' gamers control a tropical tourist mecca or rule an evil, repressive dictatorship," said Bob McNamara, producer for BreakAway Games, Paradise Island's developer. "Our goal is to provide more 'fun in the sun' tourist accommodations and attractions, plus options that include making it easier to play the bad guy."
As an all-powerful dictator, each player of "Tropico" manipulates resources to create his own thriving Caribbean paradise, while lining his personal Swiss bank account. The "Paradise Island" expansion pack features new scenarios, people, vehicles and buildings to increase the power of El Presidente and intensify his lust for power. With the expansion pack, the disastrous effects of tropical weather force players to bow to Mother Nature's will. Her fury abounds in the form of hurricanes and tropical storms, hoof and mouth disease and red tide. These disasters translate into both economic and human losses. Fragile buildings crumble, including homes, docks and bunkhouses. Crops are lost and morale decreases. As El Presidente, the player must restore the island's beauty and the people's faith in him.
