At Activision's E3 room they had several private, behind closed doors rooms showing off games like Call of Duty: Black Ops and True Crimes: Hong Kong. But out in the open, for anyone that stopped by was two TVs showing off Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions. I will admit at first I wasn't sure if I was going to spend some of my allotted time to cover the game, instead of checking out one of Activion's other offerings. The more I watched though, the more interested I became in checking out and playing this game.

One of the first things that we were told once the presenters started the demo was that this game wasn't following any movie, it was based off the comics. This means you won't be dancing down the streets of New York City ala Toby Maguire in Spider-Man 3. The premise of this game is that the Tablet of Order and Chaos has been shattered and lost between four different earths in separate dimensions. Instead of having the Spider-Man we all know journey to each of these dimensions, each of these four worlds is played by a separate and unique versions of Spider-Man.

So far the amazing Spider-Man, the version most people are familiar with will be playable, as well as Noir Spider-Man, a more stealth oriented version, set in the 1930's in a world akin to a Film Noir. Finally there's Spider-Man 2099, a hero in the future where the world is a high speed, futuristic environment with a lot of verticality. It was clear from each world that there would be something unique about each Spider-Man, be it base jumping with the 2099 version, or Stealth with the Noir version. Also, each individual Spider-Man has their own set of powers, such as 2099 being able to slow down time and dodge or redirect enemy fire. Along the way you'll encounter familiar enemies and have to fight them in order to reclaim the fragments of the tablet and restore order to all of the dimensions.

Shattered Dimensions is a third person game, that although most of the time you will be beating up bad guys, because of the decision to make four different worlds, you won't get bored of the same repetitive combat, over and over. Each world will offer up something different and keep the gameplay exciting and varied.

Writers from the actual comic have been brought in to thresh out the story so the plot and dialogue should please fans of the comics. Combine this with four distinct worlds and characters (one has yet to be named), Shattered Dimensions should be a game to keep an eye out for.

Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions is a single player only game, focusing on a rich and diverse experience for the player, and is due out September 7, 2010.
